Open Studios
Once a year, some of the artists in San Francisco open their studios to the public for one weekend. This allows us to share our work in an informal and intimate setting—and, more importantly, allows us to share a glimpse into how we work. San Francisco’s Open Studios has become a unique celebration of the various ways that the artistic process can flourish in our city.
San Francisco’s Open Studios is the oldest continuous Open Studios in North America. ArtSpan is the volunteer-driven nonprofit that organizes the event. Over time, San Francisco’s Open Studios has evolved to last four or five weekends in fall, with each section of the city having its own weekend.
When I participate, I like to host a reception with live music. My studio is small, but the music has been mighty. From the early days of solo performers—to the Hitsville Soul Sisters going acoustic—to the initial formative performances of the Sampaguitas—my studio has been graced by good sounds that go beyond what happens with my own brush.
