The Dancer Drawings
One night in 1991 or 1992 I woke up to a new idea – I could rent a dance studio once a week so that I could set up an easel in the middle of the floor so that my friend Marlo could dance around me while I drew her dancing. Marlo was game. I immediately thought of the old Sears building at Mission and Cesar Chavez – I’d been to several dance performances there, and I knew that three or four dance instructors had space there for their classes. Sure enough, I found a studio on the third floor that was looking for someone to sublet it on Sunday afternoons. And that was where Marlo and I met every Sunday for over a year. The drawings below are a small representative sampling from our collaborative project.
The Dancer Drawings are all crayon on heavyweight newsprint, 36” x 24” (1991-1992).
